So, while I feel pretty good about my current writing project, there's a very scary aspect about the whole thing...
I haven't the slightest clue where it's going.

Seriously. Not a clue. I have an idea what's going to happen in general, but not where it's going.
I find this to be not only frightening, but downright dangerous for my style...this is one of the reasons why I put projects on the back burner. I have ideas, but no middle and no end. Now, I have a middle, I've started writing the beginning to get to that middle, but no clue what to do from there. I'm hoping it flows from the story as I get to the meat and potatoes, but that's a far away horizon right now.
Felt like sharing my crippling fear.
HI Bart-Man,
ReplyDeleteMate, well done, you've absolutely nailed that one. Perfect.
And there's nothing to fear. The writing will take its own path. Don't try to constrict it. Let it flow.
When I wrote Vegemite Vindaloo, I introduced a couple of bush characters, thinking they'd be around for three or four pages.
They just took over. They dominated two whole chapters - and they were the cause (I'm guessing) of Dan laughing out loud while commuting.
My point? Don't get hassled if the story takes a different direction.
Bottom line is: Trust your instincts.
Cheers
David
Thanks David. Plus, I got a few of you blogger friends to kick me in the rear, and a wife who keeps saying "I really like this one so far."
ReplyDeleteI did have a scare last night to this morning though. Let's just say an old friend casually threw out a "you should check out this book..." to me.
I'll have more on that later today.
Bart,
ReplyDeleteCarol is right, all of us are here because we want to write. I think as long as you are happy at what you have produced so far, and it progresses every day, the next step shall come naturally.
I followed your tip and wrote an excerpt of something, just a few lines really, something that has been on my mind for a while, I have also written some, but stopped a while back... Now because of all of you, the inspiration is back!
great to have all of us to encourage each other....
cheers,
Cecilia
Cecilia-
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to be inspirado for someone else, thank you.
To quote David "The writing will take its own path."
ReplyDeleteI don't write... but I do know that creative endeavors can change direction when you least expect it. Sometimes a little spark burns to a raging fireball.
Happened last night while painting.
btw - I printed out your story (and a few other bloggers') plan to read this weekend while sitting outside in peaceful surroundings.
Chewy -
ReplyDeleteI hear you loud and clear.
Also, I hope you aren't too disappointed with what I've done so far, insomuch as it's not a complete story.
Dear Bart and Cecilia,
ReplyDeleteHit the nail on the head, both of you. That's why we're all here.
Bart, you've really moved up a gear or two, mate. And we can see you're enjoying it.
Good on your wife. I hope she continues to inspire you. Dude, we are nothing without our wives.
Want to hear more about your scare! Meant to tell you, too, that it's a great image with this post.
Gotta run ...
Cheers
David
Follow the flow, let it guide you -that creative urge will drag you along, allow it room to find it's own path - it seems to be doing pretty well up to now. As for someone else handling a similar plot - no threat - your own unique twist on things will never be duplicated, never can be. Believe in yourself!
